        Our Commitment: UnderText is a keyboard app designed for language learners. We collect minimal data necessary to provide translation services. Your privacy is our priority.
    

1. Your Privacy Control - You Choose!

UnderText gives YOU complete control over your data:

🔒 On-Device Translation (Zero Data Transmission)

Available to ALL users (Free & Premium):

✅ Uses Apple's Translation framework (iOS 26.0+)
✅ 100% on-device processing
✅ Your text NEVER leaves your device
✅ No internet connection required
✅ Works offline after language packs downloaded
✅ Apple cannot see or collect your translated text

How to use: Select "Apple Translation" in keyboard settings. This is the default for free users.

☁️ Cloud AI Translation (Premium Feature)

Available to Premium subscribers only:

🔓 Uses Azure OpenAI for enhanced accuracy
🔓 Your text IS transmitted to our secure server
🔓 Requires internet connection
✅ More accurate for complex sentences
✅ Supports same-language paraphrasing
✅ AI-powered context understanding

How to use: Enable "Use Azure OpenAI" in settings (Premium only).

What we collect: Translation text, language pair, anonymous device ID, app version.

🎯 You Decide: Even as a Premium subscriber, you can choose to use only Apple Translation (on-device) to avoid sending any data off your device. Switch between modes anytime in settings.

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Translation Data (Premium Feature Only)

When you use Azure AI translation (Premium subscription only), we transmit the following data to our secure Azure backend:

Text for Translation: The specific text you choose to translate (not all your keystrokes)
Language Pair: Source and target languages you select
Anonymous Device Identifier: A random UUID to validate your subscription status
App Version: For technical support and compatibility

How We Use This Data:

To provide real-time AI translation service
To validate your Premium subscription status
To ensure service quality and prevent abuse

Data Retention: Translation requests are processed in real-time and not permanently stored. Server logs may retain anonymous usage metrics (request count, timestamp) for up to 30 days for system maintenance.

2.2 Data Stored Locally (On Your Device Only)

The following data never leaves your device:

App settings (language preferences, keyboard layouts)
Vocabulary flashcards (if you create them)
Premium token quota tracking (for Azure AI translation)
Premium subscription status (managed by Apple StoreKit)

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

We explicitly do NOT collect, store, or transmit:

Your keystrokes (except text you explicitly choose to translate)
Personal information (name, email, phone number, address)
Location data
Contacts, photos, or other device content
Browsing history or app usage outside UnderText
Biometric data
Financial information (payments handled by Apple)

4. How We Protect Your Data

Encryption: All data transmitted to our servers uses HTTPS/TLS encryption
Anonymization: Device identifiers are randomized UUIDs, not linked to your personal identity
No Tracking: We do not use analytics, advertising SDKs, or tracking pixels
Secure Infrastructure: Azure backend follows industry-standard security practices

5. Third-Party Services

5.1 Azure OpenAI (Premium Feature)

Translation requests use Azure OpenAI API. Microsoft's privacy policy applies to data processed by their services. Learn more: Microsoft Privacy Statement

5.2 Apple Services

Apple Translation: All users get Apple's on-device Translation framework with unlimited access (data never leaves your device)
StoreKit: Premium subscriptions managed by Apple (Apple's privacy policy applies)

5.3 Free Dictionary API

English word definitions use Free Dictionary API (open-source, no data retention). Learn more: Free Dictionary API

6. Data Sharing

We do NOT sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.

Limited Sharing: Data is only shared with:

Azure OpenAI (for translation processing only)
Apple (for subscription management only)

7. Your Rights

7.1 Data Access & Deletion

Translation Data: Not permanently stored; requests processed in real-time
Local Data: Delete the app to remove all local data
Server Logs: Contact us to request deletion of any server-side logs associated with your device ID

7.2 Opt-Out

Use Free tier (Apple Translation) to avoid sending data to our servers
Disable "Allow Full Access" to use keyboard without translation features
Cancel Premium subscription anytime through Apple subscriptions

8. Children's Privacy

UnderText is rated 4+ and suitable for all ages. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided data, contact us immediately.
